Every parent, teacher, daycare provider & grandparent should have some fun and easy “go to” activities for their kiddos to do that DON”T involve the TV or other electronics. I am talking good old fashion, imagination fostering, memory making, brain building activities. As an elementary teacher, I have seen a severe decline in students’ ability to imagine and make-believe. When I ask my students what their favorite things to do or play with at home, the majority of them are now answering, “play video games” or “watch You Tube videos” on their phones. Yep, most of them now have phones too. My students are 7 years old!!! Not sure about you but when I was 7, I was riding my bike, playing with barbies or building cities with Legos. I am not against technology, as it has served me well — but I believe limits should be put on these items. It’s important to take it away sometimes and expect kids to create, imagine and play!! Here is a simple recipe that encourages just that kind of fun! Most of these items can be found right in your cupboard!

You will need:

1 1/4 cup flour

Plus additional 1/2 cup flour

1/4 cup salt

1 package unsweetened Kool-Aid

1 1/2 tablespoon vegetable oil

1 cup boiling water

In a bowl, mix together all flour (except the 1/2 additional cup) salt, and Kool-Aid.

Stir into flour mixture the boiling water and vegetable oil.

Continue to stir until mixed thoroughly. Mixture will appear a bit sticky.

Dump the remaining 1/2 cup of flour on a clean dry counter or work surface. Scrape out play dough mixture onto counter. Caution- it may still be a bit hot. When cool enough to touch knead dough into flour until mixture is no longer sticky.

Store in an airtight container. I usually use a recycled Kool Whip container. This will keep for 2-4 months.

This play dough is wonderfully soft and pliable. You can use any unsweetened Kool-Aid flavor that you wish. Each flavor offers a different scent and color for fun! This play dough is nontoxic but should NOT be ingested. Please do not leave real young children unattended while using, if there is a risk of them eating it or choking on it. Children will love wearing a craft/cooking apron while playing with their new play dough.
